Packaging Burgers for Delivery

A box that works perfectly over the counter can fail badly on a twenty-minute delivery, and almost always for the same four reasons. None of them is about the burger.

Time

Everything gets worse with time. Grease that has not reached the board in two minutes will have reached it in fifteen. Steam that has not softened the bun over the counter will have softened it by the time the rider arrives. Specify for the worst realistic journey, not the average one.

Stacking

Delivery boxes do not travel alone. They go into a bag with other orders, and the bottom one carries everything above it. That is a compression load a single layer of cardboard is not designed for, which is why corrugated board — with its stiffening fluted layer — is the default for delivery-heavy operations. Movement

A burger that fits loosely will slide, and a burger that slides arrives leaning against one wall with the sauce on the board. This is the most common delivery complaint and the cheapest to fix: size the box to the build with only a few millimeters of clearance, and use an insert where the build is unstable. Steam

A sealed box keeps heat in and steam in, and steam is what turns a crisp bun soft and a crisp fry limp. Ventilation lets it out but lets heat out with it, which is a genuine trade-off on a long journey rather than a problem with an obvious answer.

The practical resolution is to stop treating the order as one thing. Vent what should stay crisp and seal what should stay hot: fries in a vented box, the burger in a closed one. One compromise box does neither job well.

Splitting the order

That principle extends across the whole order. Fries in with the burger will steam it, sauce loose in the bag will leak, and a drink alongside an unsupported box will crush it. Grease, specifically

On a long journey a coating alone often is not enough, and the fix is a barrier inside the box rather than a heavier box: a liner under the build, or a wrap around the burger itself. A delivery specification, in short

Corrugated board for the stack. Snug sizing with an insert if the build is tall. Vented packaging for anything fried, sealed for anything that must stay hot. A liner or wrap for grease. Separate containers for fries, sauces and drinks.
