Greaseproof Burger Packaging: What Actually Works

A grease mark on the outside of a box is the fastest way to make good food look cheap. It is also mostly preventable, and the fix is rarely the expensive one people reach for first.

Why boxes leak

Grease does not soak through board evenly. It wicks along fibers and finds the weakest point — usually a fold, a scored crease or a cut edge where the board is exposed. That is why a box can look sound across its faces and still show a dark line along the bottom corner after ten minutes.

Heat makes it worse by thinning the fat, and time makes it worse still. A box that is perfectly clean over the counter can arrive stained after a twenty-minute delivery.

Coatings

A coating puts a barrier on the surface of the board. It is the most common answer and the most cost-effective for normal service: it resists the grease long enough for the food to be eaten, and it is applied as part of the print run rather than as a separate item.

Gloss and matte coatings both provide a barrier, and the choice between them is largely about appearance. Spot UV puts a heavier gloss layer over selected artwork, which looks sharp but is not a substitute for coating the areas that actually meet the food.

Liners, wraps and inserts

Where the build is wet — a lot of sauce, a juicy patty, anything with dressing — the more reliable answer is to put something between the food and the board. Liners sit inside the box and take the grease directly. Wraps hold the burger itself, which also keeps it together while it is eaten. Inserts hold the build in place and, as a side effect, keep the wettest part off the wall of the box. All three are listed under burger box styles by type.

This is usually cheaper than upgrading the whole box, and it works better, because it addresses where the grease actually is rather than trying to stop it after it has already reached the board.

Ventilation, and the trade-off nobody mentions

A sealed box traps steam, and trapped steam softens board from the inside and turns a crisp bun soggy. Ventilation holes let the steam out, which keeps the food better and takes pressure off the board — but they also let heat out, and on a long delivery that is a real cost.

The rough rule: vent for fried items and anything that should stay crisp, seal for things that should stay hot, and if you sell both, use different packaging for each rather than one compromise box.

Bagasse, without a plastic lining

Bagasse resists grease structurally rather than through a coating, because the pressed sugarcane fiber is dense enough to slow the wicking. That makes it useful where you want grease resistance and compostability at the same time, which a plastic-lined board cannot offer.

What to specify

For counter service with a normal build, a coated cardboard or kraft box is enough. For delivery, add a liner or a wrap and consider corrugated board for the stack — the board options are compared under burger boxes by material. For anything unusually wet, assume the box alone will not hold and put a barrier inside it.
