- Ordering a clamshell for a delivery-first menu and finding lids open under a stack of three.
- Buying one size for the whole menu. Sliders rattle in a standard box and a double will not close in one.
- Printing a combo box without a divider, then fielding complaints about soggy buns. Burger-and-chip boxes with a divider solve this at the 8x5x2.5 size.
- Approving the proof without checking the inside panel. Inside print is a cheap upgrade, but only if it is in the file.
Choosing the Right Burger Box Style
Clamshell, parcel or sleeve: pick the closure first
The closure decides how the box behaves in a bag. A hinged clamshell opens flat on the table and is the quickest to pack at the line. A parcel-style box with a tuck lid locks tighter, so it holds a tall build and resists popping open in transit. A sleeve slides over a tray and is the cheapest way to add print to a plain container. If your team is split between the first two, read our clamshell versus parcel box comparison before you order samples of both.
Box types and where each one earns its keep
| Type | Use it when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Clamshell | Counter service, fast packing | Lid can gap on a tall burger |
| Takeaway / parcel | Delivery, stacked bags | Slower to assemble |
| Window box | Display counters, gift orders | Film shows condensation |
| Foldable flat-pack | Tight storage space | Staff training on folds |
| Tray plus wrap paper | Dine-in, sliders | No protection in a bag |
| Burger-and-chip box | Combo meals in one piece | Fries steam the bun without a divider |
Windows are worth the extra cost only when the customer sees the box before buying. For a glass-front counter, window boxes that show the burger do real work; for delivery they add cost and nothing else.
The parts people forget
A box is rarely the whole package. Liners keep grease off the printed board so the outside stays clean in the customer's hand. Inserts stop a double stack sliding sideways. Wrap paper under the bun lets you keep a plain box and still show the brand on opening. Frozen patty boxes for retail are a separate conversation about board weight and cold-chain moisture. We print grease-resistant liners for printed boxes in the same run as the box, so colors match across the set.
