Frequently Asked Questions

Which material holds up best for a burger that travels 20 minutes or more?

Corrugated E flute is the strongest choice for longer trips, because the fluted layer traps air and resists crushing in a stacked delivery bag. Polystyrene insulates well too, but it is harder to brand. For dine-in or short pickup runs, SBS paperboard is usually enough and prints sharper. If heat retention and presentation both matter, pair an E flute box with a grease-resistant food-grade lining.

What is the practical difference between kraft and recycled kraft board?

Virgin kraft is made from fresh wood pulp, so it is a little stronger and has a more even brown tone. Recycled kraft contains reclaimed fiber, which gives it a slightly speckled look and a stronger recycled story on the box. Both print well with dark inks and take the same grease-resistant coatings. Ask for a physical sample of each if surface texture matters to your brand.

Is bagasse a good fit for juicy or saucy burgers?

Bagasse is molded from sugarcane fiber, and its dense structure handles grease and moisture better than uncoated paperboard. It works well for dripping burgers, loaded fries and sauced sides. The tradeoff is print: bagasse is usually branded with an embossed logo, a sleeve or a sticker rather than full-color artwork. If you need photo-quality graphics, coated kraft or SBS board is the better route.

When does polystyrene still make sense compared with paper-based boxes?

Polystyrene and styrofoam clamshells are light, insulate well and cost little, so some high-volume takeout counters still prefer them. Check your city and state rules first, because several US areas restrict foam food containers. Print options on foam are limited, so branding usually comes from a printed sleeve or label. If foam is allowed where you operate, we can quote it next to a paper option for comparison.

Which board gives the sharpest print for detailed artwork and photos?

White SBS paperboard gives the cleanest print, because the bright, smooth surface shows fine lines, small text and photo detail accurately. It also takes gloss, matte, soft-touch, spot UV and foil finishes well. Kraft absorbs more ink and mutes colors, which suits bold, simple logos better than photographs. Corrugated can carry detailed print too when a printed sheet is laminated over the flute.

How heavy should the board be for a standard single-patty burger box?

For a typical 5x5x3 inch box holding one patty, standard SBS or kraft paperboard is enough for counter service and short pickup. Move up to corrugated E flute if boxes are stacked in delivery bags, carry double patties or sit under heat lamps. B flute is thicker still and is mostly used for catering trays and bulk carriers. Tell us the menu item and we will suggest a board weight.

Can a paper-based burger box stop grease from soaking through?

Yes. Paperboard, kraft and corrugated boxes can be ordered with grease-resistant food-grade coatings or linings on the inside surface, which keep oil from wicking into the board and staining the printed outside. This matters most for smash burgers, fried chicken sandwiches and anything heavy on sauce. Food-safe inks are used on all printed surfaces. Mention your greasiest menu item when you request a quote.

Do eco-friendly materials cost more than standard cardboard?

Sometimes, but the gap is often smaller than buyers expect. Every material starts from $0.20 per unit at our 100-unit minimum, and the final price depends on size, board, print, finish and quantity. Bagasse and recycled kraft can run slightly higher on small runs, while larger quantities narrow the difference. Request quotes on two materials side by side to see the real numbers for your order.

Can I mix materials within one order, such as kraft boxes and corrugated carriers?

Yes. Many restaurants order kraft burger boxes for single meals and corrugated carriers or trays for family orders, all printed with the same logo. Each item is quoted on its own size and material, and each line needs to meet the 100-unit minimum. Keeping artwork consistent across materials is part of the free design service, and colors are adjusted so the logo reads correctly on brown and white board.

How can I compare materials before committing to a full run?

Start with the free 2D proof and 3D mockup, which show your artwork on the chosen board color and finish. If texture, stiffness or grease resistance is the deciding factor, request physical samples of the materials you are weighing. Hold each one with a real burger inside for ten minutes and check for softening. Our comparison of kraft, cardboard and corrugated burger boxes covers strength and print differences.
